Would you be willing to spend some time each week doing something fun and fulfilling- especially if you knew it would change a child’s life forever?
We are looking for older adults 50+ to work one-on-one with a student, grades K-3, who needs help developing reading and language skills during the course of the academic year.
If you're interested in being a tutor and mentor to a East Harlem student, please email us at volunteers@unionsettlement.org for more information!
Volunteers must attend 3 orientation/training sessions. Schedule is below:
Part 1: Tuesday, February 14, 2017, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Part 2: Thursday, February 16, 2017, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Part 3: Friday, February 17, 2017, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
(All 3 training sessions are required. Lunch will be provided each day)

Description
Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
