Join our seniors for our annual Chinese New Year celebration on Friday, February 17th at the Johnson Community Center in East Harlem! Volunteers will help set up for the party beginning at 8am and the party will run from 10am to 1pm. After the party ends, volunteers will help with clean-up. The party will feature food, music, and performances for East Harlem's growing Chinese senior population as they celebrate the new year. This is one of our larger events and we anticipate having over 400 seniors attend!

Interested volunteers can email us at volunteers@unionsettlement.org with the subject "Chinese New Year Volunteer."

Thought not required, volunteers who are bilingual in Mandarin and/or Cantonese are a plus. If you are bilingual, please indicate that you are in your message to us.

Mission Statement

Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.

Description

Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
