The Ketchikan office of Southeast Alaska Independent Living is seeking volunteers to particiapte in a pilot program aimed at helping people experiencing disabilities and the eldery apply for social security and social security disability benefits.
Volunteers must:
- Take a 12 hour training (this is done as a group)
- Agree to a background check
- Agree to submit to fingerprinting
After training, volunteers will work to help people who, in many cases, are living in the margins of society due to a variety of factors including but not limited to poverty, incarceration, homeslessness, and disabilities of every color. Volunteers will be working in the trentches to help vulnerable indiviuals meet their most basic needs so that they have the opportunity to strive beyong the scope of their basic needs to reach their full potential.

Description
SAIL empowers elders and people with disabilities by providing services and information to support those individuals in making choices that will positively affect independence and productivity in society.
Programs and services include: ORCA (an adaptive outdoor pursuit program for all abilities and interests), advocacy, de-institutionalization services, home modifications, wheelchair accessible taxi voucher program, support groups, ADA compliance reviews, aging and disability services, assistive technology, benifits counceling, blind and deaf services, pre-employment and employment services, and SSI/SSDI enrollment assistance.
