Seven Tepees Youth Program is a nonprofit, community based organization that provides comprehensive youth development and college access and persistence services to over 1,000 youth annually through two programs: The Learning Center and The College & Career Program. Our Learning Center works with low income middle and high school students as well as recent college graduates for a period of over ten years - spanning middle school and high school graduation into the first few years of college or career - offering academic support and guidance, college and career advising, environmental education, mentoring, job training and counseling. Our College and Career Program at Mission High School, a public school serving predominantly low income and first generation students, includes college and career advising, scholarship assistance, scholarships, test preparation support and college application assistance. Seven Tepees has an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million and inhabits the top floor of a building owned by the organization.
Mission:
The mission of Seven Tepees is to work with urban youth to foster the skills they need to make lifelong positive choices and to create their own opportunities for success. Founded in 1995 by retired Juvenile Justice Daniel Weinstein and Native American healer Hully Fetico, Seven Tepees began as a summer camp where youth lived in seven tepees - one representing each continent of the world.
Volunteers make Seven Tepees Youth Program possible, as we rely on your support to offer students every opportunity available.
Seven Tepees is currently looking for after-school tutors for the 2016-2017 school year at our Learning Center in the Mission at 3177 17th Street at S. Van Ness.
Sign-up for our next volunteer orientation, which takes place on Thursday, January 19th from 6:30 to 8pm.Tutoring is provided to Seven Tepees students Monday through Thursday as part of the after-school program. Tutors give youth an opportunity to achieve academic success by giving personalized support to each student. Our students are in middle school (6th-8th grades) and high school (9th-12th grades), and their studies include math, science, history and literature. Tutors should be comfortable supporting students in general studies, and tutors with specialized areas of expertise/study are encouraged to apply.
We are in need of tutors who are proficient in subjects such as high school math, biology, physics and chemistry.
Tutors commit to at least 1 day per week - we welcome more! - for 1.5 to 2 hours depending on grade level. We are currently in need of tutors Monday through Thursday.
Middle School: 4:00 to 6:00 pm
High School: 4:30 to 6:00 pm
To start tutoring with Seven Tepees, please contact Gaƫlle Feliz, Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteer@7tepees.org to apply to become a volunteer and to sign-up for our next volunteer orientation, which takes place on Thursday, January 19th from 6:30 to 8pm.
