Allen Neighborhood Center is offering unpaid internships to those interested in developing skills and gaining experience in human services or macro-level social work. The duration of the summer internship will be from May 2017 - July 2017.
Interns will hear about social and economic barriers from neighborhood residents instead of textbooks and lectures and will assist residents in moving beyond those barriers. They will assist in connecting neighbors to one another based on their interests. They will also support neighbors and groups with issues they are interested in addressing within their community.
This is an outstanding opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of community resources, view social justice issues first-hand, and hone their communication skills with a diverse population.
Enrollment and Walk-In Center
By staffing what is known as the "living room of the neighborhood", interns provide information and referrals to community programs. They will learn eligibility and the application process for the Ingham Health Plan, state assistance programs through the Department of Human Services, emergency food distributions and local housing resources and guide neighbors through those processes.
Qualifications
All majors are accepted. Hours are variable, usually, during regular business hours. However, a minimum of 6 hours/week is expected. The internship is unpaid but we will work with any students seeking college credit. There are many positions available.
- Must be able to commit at least 6 hours per week.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Well-organized and responsible.
- Spanish proficiency a plus.
We are able to partner with academic institutions to provide this internship for college credit.
