Underwater grasses are critical to waterway restoration. This participant has finished her grow-out process and is ready to plant at Mason Neck State Park.

Grasses for the Masses is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's citizen-based underwater grasses restoration program. With underwater grasses at 20% of historic levels, all waterways are in need of critical restoration work.

These grasses are the primary habitat for critters like blue crabs, reduce erosion and slow water flow, pull pollutants out of the water column, and contribute to climate change resiliency. Become an active steward for water by growing and planting underwater grasses.

The program provides citizens with grow kits, freshwater submerged grass seed (specifically wild celery), and instructions on how to grow out your grasses. Workshops are held across the state in late January and early February; citizens grow through May, at which point they plant their grasses at restoration sites on the James and Potomac rivers.

After the two-hour workshop, maintenance of the grasses is minimal. Simply maintain the water level and remove any algae that accumulates. Kits are $40/each, and citizens must provide their own lightbulbs, sand, and soil. More information can be found at www.cbf.org/grasses.

Mission Statement

Save the Bay™, and keep it saved, as defined by reaching a 70 on CBF's Health Index.

Description

Founded in 1967, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest independent conservation organization dedicated solely to saving the Bay. Serving as a watchdog, we fight for effective, science-based solutions to the pollution degrading the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Our motto, "Save the Bay," is a regional rallying cry for pollution reduction throughout the Chesapeake's six-state, 64,000-square-mile watershed, which is home to more than 17 million people and 3,000 species of plants and animals.

With offices in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia and 15 field centers, CBF leads the way in restoring the Bay and its rivers and streams. Over the last four decades, we have created broad understanding of the Bay's poor health, engaged public leaders in making commitments to restore the Chesapeake, and fought successfully to create a new approach to cleanup that features real accountability-the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint.

But the Bay is still a system dangerously out of balance. We continue to engage in education, advocacy, litigation, and restoration to turn the tide and leave a legacy of clean water for future generations.
