CentroNYC
Providing education, support and community to immigrant New Yorkers since 1975

Centro NYC, a non-profit organization serving the immigrant community in New York City, seeks volunteer ESL teachers for its 2018 spring term, beginning September 20th and continuing through December 20th.
Classroom English teaching experience is preferred. However we do recruit new teachers with strong English communication skills and a good feel for grammar, even if you don't know all the rules! New teachers are partnered with and mentored by experienced teachers. Time commitment: One Tuesday or Thursday evening per week teaching plus the time required for lesson preparation (usually every other week.) Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-9:00 p.m. near Lincoln Center in Manhattan, and teachers are asked to arrive 6-6:15 to set up. In addition, there will be one staff meeting in April, and possibly one mid-semester. We have openings for teachers of beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.

Please respond by email to Andrea at andrea@CentroNYC.org. Include your resume and tell us the evening(s) that you're available for teaching.

Mission Statement

CentroNYC is an all-volunteer non-profit organization serving today’s immigrants through affordable English, Spanish, and citizenship classes. Our evening education and advocacy programs and cultural events help students develop the skills to navigate the challenges of living and working in New York City. CentroNYC is a warm and welcoming community that promotes cross-cultural understanding and support.

Description

We offer English (ESOL) and Spanish language classes taught by native speakers, and a civics class for immigrants preparing for the U.S. Citizenship exam. Intercambio, our weekly Spanish-English language exchange, promotes intercultural learning, understanding and friendship. Although founded by and for Latin American newcomers, we welcome immigrants and "new" New Yorkers from all over the world. Our all-volunteer teaching and administrative staff makes classes available at low cost. Our volunteer Coordinating Committee meets monthly to discuss programming and budget issues, and to plan upcoming classes and special events. We have openings throughout the year for dedicated volunteer English and Spanish teachers, and administrative and marketing staff to join our team. Teaching experience is desired but not required. New teachers are paired with and mentored by veteran teachers. We are pleased to announce that CentroNYC has joined the Goddard Riverside family. Goddard Riverside is a leading community-based social services provider in New York City, with 26 programs for children, young adults and seniors. Its roots that extend back to the 19th century American Settlement House Movement. Like Centro, Goddard Riverside is committed to providing educational and cultural opportunities to all New Yorkers and for nurturing connection and building community. We look forward to a long and productive relationship between our two organizations.
