Make/reheat, serve, and share soul food lunch and conversation with frail elders celebrating MLK Jr. Day in Boston's South End.
Befriend 20-40 frail, low-income, isolated elders (who used to be homeless or at risk of eviction) who are now housed permanently.
Building on PMD's 20+ years of experience helping this community of elders, PMD volunteers will cook/reheat, serve, and share lunch, then help elders share their thoughts and memories of the era/life and work of Dr. King.
All volunteers must be healthy and able to follow cooking instructions while standing in the hot kitchen, then serve, visit, and clean up.
This is a fragrance-free event. Volunteers may not use/wear scented hair/face/hand/body/clothing products,
including soaps and lotions.
Beginning 12/21/18, volunteers must register directly with PMD at http://www.pmd.org/s/MLK18.htm by 1/16/19.
Advance authorization of criminal history record check (download the form at http://www.pmd.org/CORI_172c_2012.pdf) and providing a scan of current, government-issued photo ID required for all volunteers age 18 and older by emailing them to Lori@pmd.org by 1/11/17 (or sending hardcopies so they arrive at PO BOx 120189, Boston, MA 02112 by 1/16/19).
Volunteers are asked to contribute $10 each to offset the cost of these meals. Financial hardship waiver choice available when you register at http://www.pmd.org/s/MLK19.htm
A parent/guardian must register individually and participate fully with volunteers ages 14-15.

PMD organizes 60+ hands-on community service projects each year and posts listings and distributes e-mail announcements describing upcoming projects and volunteer needs.

You need only commit to participate for the entire project time span--no dues, no required advance orientation meetings, and no skills assumed. About half of the volunteers of any given PMD project (which involve 12-25 people total) are first-time PMD volunteers, so no need to worry about cliques or not feeling included.
In order to participate, you must register yourself (not freinds, spouses, or children--each individual must register him/her-self) online using the unique zoomernag link listed under HOW in the details for each project. If you cannot register using a desk- or lap-top computer, please call PMD at (*82)1-781-963-0373 for assistance.
After you register online, you will see a confirmation screen and receive a confirmation email message. Then a few days before the project you will be emailed PDF information about what to expect, what to bring, and how to get there (by car and by public transportation).
