Chad Foundation Heart Screening - Harlem, NY
Rice High School Student Athlete, receiving Echocardiogram Screening to detect heart anomalies.

THE CHAD FOUNDATION FOR ATHLETES AND ARTISTS is seeking Volunteers with excellent Admin/Research/and People Skills to advocate for hospitals across the US to institute "Heart Screening Programs for Young Athletes and Students to Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest." 6,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 34 die annually from SCD. Preventive Heart Screenings can detect unknown heart anomalies and premature risk factors, like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity in the young. CHAD has provided 10,000 Echocardiogram and EKG screenings to help save young lives; its future focus is to expand the number of heart screenings and maximize the number of young people screened by partnering with Hospitals that already have state-of-the-art heart screening equipment, medical facilities, and follow-up medical staff in place. Today, several hospitals nationwide have already initiated successful heart screening programs to detect unknown anomalies in athletes and students. Your dedication and skillset can help us safeguard hearts in a major way by researching hospitals who are in the forefront of preventive screenings for young people. Medical background is a plus, but just as important is a passion and interest to help keep young hearts healthy through early detection so they can lead long lives and achieve their dreams. We are seeking volunteers who will form a dynamite team that can dedicate and commit to 5 to 7 hours a month as the project is ongoing.

We invite you to visit our new website that will launch soon: https://chad-foundation-website.vercel.app/ . Thank you for your interest in safeguarding young hearts. Let us know what piques your interest in this project. All emails with cover letters ( doesn’t have to be long) and resumes will be given respectful appreciation. We look forward to hearing from you.

THE CHAD FOUNDATION FOR ATHLETES AND ARTISTS, a nonprofit foundation, was founded to inspire youth to live as its namesake, Chad Butrum, did- anti-substance abuse and alcohol-free, "Healthy body/mind/ spirit." (Chad never smoked a cigarette or drank an alcoholic beverage his entire Life .) He loved athletics, was a great supporter of the arts, and loved all people, caring about the dreams and potential of all those he encountered. At the age of 26, Chad died suddenly of Sudden Cardiac Death in Young Athletes while playing football in CA, with no prior history of heart disease.

Mission Statement

The Chad Foundation for Athletes and Artists' mission is two-fold: First, to raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death in Young Athletes and Students through educational lectures, videos, and preventive "Cardiovascular Screenings to High Schools, Colleges, Athletic organizations, and the Disenfranchised," which also identify early cardio risk factors. Secondarily, our mission as artists is to create/produce/sponsor art - film, theatre, and books that celebrate American stories of all heritages and provide inspiring role models. Chad is dedicated to showing the inherent diversity of our country - the struggles, joys, and dreams of all Americans and providing a format for artists of all heritages to showcase their talents. "The Gifts of Heart and Art."

The Gift of Heart and Art

The Chad Foundation provides preventive heart screenings that detect unknown heart anomalies and safeguard hearts. Chad has provided cardiovascular screening events in 5 states and abroad (Austria, screening 16 countries of athletes and Sweden, screening 26 countries of athletes participating in the "Homeless Streetsoccer World Cups") for a total of 9,250 persons screened. In NY, post 9-11, Chad provided 2,000 NYPD officers with complete cardiovascular screenings at The NY Police Academy. Columbia University football players also received free echocardiograms, ECGs, diabetes, cholesterol, BMI (obesity), and blood pressure screenings.

The Chad Players provided 9 Off-Broadway multi-cultural performances to challenge the mind and heal the spirit, including their production of "Days of Wine and Roses." The play was sponsored by "The Atlantic City Commission on Missing & Abused Children" as the community event of the year to show teens the deleterious effects substance abuse can have on the family.
