We would like to offer open hours in our Computer room, during which time our ESL and Computer class learners can get some additional practice. This is not a class so volunteers would not be required to prepare a lesson. However, volunteers would be available in the computer room to assist with questions the students may have as they practice activities of their choice on the computer.
Examples of questions students may have include:
- clarifying questions about saving, opening, or formatting documents (such as a resume) on Microsoft Word
- finding or navigating a site on the Internet
- Logging into or sending an email
- Filling out an online job application
- Using Burlington English, a computer-based curriculum used in our ESL classrooms (We would train you)
- Offering suggestions to students on what to practice from a pool of resources/activities provided (Volunteers are welcome to assist in preparing these materials if they are interested, but it is not a requirement for volunteering)
We are looking for someone who is comfortable with serving individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, many of whom have limited computer literacy, and will have diverse needs. Ideal candidates are able to stand and walk around the room and are flexible working with a changing group of students in a small-staffed non-profit setting. Our computer room has a capacity for 8-16 students. Volunteers will not be required to perform technical support on the computers.
