This is a great opportunity to meet, sit and work with the Gideon's Promise community, which includes our public defenders, staff, and panelist. This year's panel includes Jeffery Robinson from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

We need volunteers to help at our registration table, set up AV, set up and break down training rooms and clean up after training and Panel discussion. Volunteers are needed in shifts of 4-5 hours each day, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. All meals and parking expenses will be provided by Gideon's Promise during the days volunteering.

Great people skills, multi-tasking and the ability to lift are the only skills required. Every volunteer will be paired up with a Gideon's Promise staff member for assistance. All three (3) days (1/19-1/21) are not required to be involved!

Mission Statement

Our mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.

Description

WE ARE THE VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Gideon v. Wainright that state courts are required under the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to provide counsel in criminal cases to represent defendants who are unable to afford to pay their own attorneys. That same year, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in our nation’s capitol. Both occurrences marked a monumental shift towards equality in the justice system and social infrastructure in our country.

Although 1963 was a pivotal year for civil and human rights, our jails and prisons are still populated with people who are not receiving quality representation due to financial, structural and cultural changes needed in the criminal justice system. Many people in the system are overwhelmingly poor and disproportionately minorities. For them, Gideon’s promise remains unfulfilled and justice out of reach.

Public defenders are necessary if we are to realize equal justice in America. We are the voice for the voiceless.
