ORGANIZATION: Building Skills Partnership

We are looking for volunteers needed to assist instructor in a multi-level English as a Second Language (ESL) class for immigrant janitors and community members in Oakland. Teaching Aides will assist the instructor, often working with small groups or individual students to provide extra support or run activities. The class is a fun learning environment where low-wage workers build community and improve their English skills. In turn, volunteers with BSP receive training and acquire skills in teaching ESL, intercultural communication, adult education while being an active part of immigrant integration in our community. The time to foster equity and get involved is increasingly important as we head into the new year!

Class location: 3411 E/12th St, Suite 200., Oakland, CA 94601 (Right next to Fruitvale bart)

Class schedule: Saturdays starting 1/21/2017 from 12:30- 2:30 PM.

Volunteer Skill Requirements:

  • Patience, enthusiasm, flexibility, passion about working within the community.
  • Ability to volunteer at least once a week for a minimum of four months.
  • Dependability.
  • Spanish speaking skills and teaching experience helpful, but not required.
  • ESL and Adult Education experience a plus!

Our Organization: Building Skills Partnership (BSP) is a statewide non-profit collaboration between the Californian janitors' union, SEIU-USWW, community leaders, and responsible businesses to build a strong future for building service workers, their families, and communities by advancing skills, opportunities, and self-sufficiency.

The Building Skills Partnership (BSP) represents a unique non-profit collaboration between the property service workers’ union Service Employees International Union - United Service Workers West (SEIU- USWW), commercial building owners, property service employers, client companies and community leaders. BSP offers comprehensive programs tailored to the diverse needs of the community. Our core strategies leverage workforce development, immigrant integration, and community advancement. We have seven offices across the state of California from Sacramento to San Diego. Building Skills Partnership program areas and its curriculum play a key role in driving the productivity and competitiveness of the industry and contributing to the economic and social development of our communities throughout the state.
