Description:
Volunteer Classroom Assistants are right-hand to the teaching artist in facilitating hands-on experiences, and help with providing a positive, personal learning experience. Volunteers help prepare supplies, interact and build relationships with the students, and assist with paperwork. This position is a 3 month service commitment of 2 hours weekly.
Requirements:
This position is a 3 month service commitment of 2 hours minimum weekly.
Design assistant must utilize their own computer and software.
Telework is permitted; although on site work is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Preparing the physical environment of the classroom for lessons.
Ensuring that teaching materials are ready for use.
Assisting a student who is experiencing difficulties in completing the task.
Making sure all students are involved.
Attending to the needs of a student who is having problems.
Providing general encouragement for all the children in the class.
Taking extra time to explain the teaching material to children who have not understood it the first time.
Taking charge of these activities on the day the Teaching Artist is absent.
Keeping classroom records and notes about the progress of all the children.
Qualifications :
Interest in Arts, Social Work, or Elementary/Secondary Education.
Punctual, dependable and organized.
Age 15 and older.
The ability to motivate and encourage children and youth.
The ability to work well as part of a team.
The ability to use one’s own initiative.
The ability to remain patient and calm under pressure.
A creative mind. Tact and sensitivity. A warm and approachable personality.

PROJECT CREATE is a community-based nonprofit that promotes creative youth development through multi-disciplinary arts education and enrichment. Project Create teaching artists have been working with children, youth, and families in Washington, D.C. for over twenty years. Our students participate in out-of-school-time art classes, workshops, open studio, field trips, and exhibition and performance opportunities. Project Create offers free creative classes and workshops at our studio in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast DC in Ward 8, as well as at 14 partner locations in underserved neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. Courses include visual, performing, and digital media arts classes like drawing and painting, illustration, photography, collage, spoken word, fashion, music production and theater.
