Refugee Focus

Refugee Focus is a non-profit refugee resettlement agency in downtown Phoenix. For more than thirty years, Refugee Focus has served some of the world’s most persecuted people living right here in Phoenix. Violence and armed conflict chase millions of people from their homes, their families, and their countries, forcing them to seek safety in other countries around the world. Interning with Refugee Focus is a great opportunity to gain international experience locally and help resettle over 1,000 refugees this year.

Refugee Focus’s mentoring program pairs refugees with volunteer mentors who help their mentees accomplish personal goals for developing self-sufficiency and integrating into American society. As an intern, you will be helping newly-arrived refugees establish roots and develop friendships in their new community while acquiring experience in non-profit refugee resettlement and program coordination.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and onboard new potential mentors through community outreach, social media, and volunteer engagement sites
  • Schedule and perform orientations for new mentors
  • Communicate with mentoring pairs and ensure mentorships are accomplishing goals and having regular meetings
  • Assist with planning quarterly mentor training events
  • Promote Refugee Focus programs to the community in a highly professional manner and be available to assist with related activities as they arise during the semester

Qualifications:

This internship requires dedication and a strong sense of personal responsibility and self-motivation in a quickly changing environment. Familiarity with Microsoft office. Applicants should be comfortable working in a multi-cultural environment and communicating with people with limited English skills.

Showing kindness, doing justice, and serving those in need.

Description

Refugee Focus, a division of Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS-SW), is dedicated to helping refugees establish new lives in Arizona.

Refugees are men, women, and children who are forced to flee their homes, leaving behind all they have known for an uncertain future. They are unable to return to their homelands for fear of persecution due to their race, gender, religion, nationality, or membership in a social or political group. Refugees are among the most vulnerable of all immigrants fleeing countries that have been ravaged by civil strife or war. They come from nations throughout the world including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Burundi, Congo, Cuba, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Rwanda, Somalia, and Sudan.

Refugee Focus provides core services for refugees as well as employment services, ESL classes, children’s tutoring, and classes through the Adult Skill-building and Women’s Empowerment Programs.

The Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP) focuses on the well-being of refugee women through skill-building and educational services. Often times, refugee women are coming from cultures where they are offered fewer opportunities than men. The WEP gives clients a chance to gain skills and build their confidence, which could lead to job opportunities and self-sufficiency. Some examples of WEP classes are sewing, knitting, computer skills, microenterprise development, health, and nutrition.
