Build and maintain a list of research projects. Work with institutions and others to develop opportunities for research class projects or projects for volunteers.

Meet with teachers and administrators of the public schools to look for ways in which local history research might enhance the curriculum. Possibly post research projects to volunteer sites.

While working on the initial list of research opportunities, you will need to come to the museum in Cheney. Afterwards, much of this activity can be done without having to come to the museum.

About Cheney Historical Museum

Location:

612 3rd Street, P.O. Box 457, Cheney, WA 99004, US

Mission Statement

Sharing and preserving the history of the Marshall, Four Lakes, Cheney, Tyler, and Amber districts of southwest Spokane County in eastern Washington, connecting the past with the present and building a bridge to the future by: a) Engaging the community in preserving our collection, our local history, historic places, and understanding their value; b) Working with organizations, institutions, business, and community to promote our districts' cultural life and heritage; c) Interpreting the history of our districts based on solid research.

Description

Our collection comes from the families, businesses, farms, and organizations in our districts. We actively seek new materials to add to the collection, so that our story may become richer and more complete. We care for these materials through public donations, so they will be available for future generations.

Our exhibits use these materials to engage visitors in our story, and to help young people gain a new perspective and fuel their imaginations. The museum and its programs are operated completely by volunteers and through public donations. We receive no local government funding for our facility or operations.

Programs include having the museum open regular hours, staffed by volun teers to greet and chat with visitors; guiding and engaging students through the museum during field trips; helping researchers look through materials; transcribing and data entry projects.
