Public transit is the primary means of transportation for almost every newly arrived refugees and navigating the complex system can pose a challenge, even for most well-established American. Transit Training Volunteers will provide weekly trainings on accessing and using Valley Metro public transportation in Phoenix to new arrivals as a part of the Cultural Orientation classes. Ideally, volunteers will provide both group and individual public transportation trainings using existing curriculum and materials. Public transit trainings start at the client’s apartment complex, continues to the IRC office, and then returns to the client’s home.
Volunteers will be provided with extensive training, bus passes, and an interpreter. Although this opportunity may not sound glamorous, it’s an incredible opportunity to hear the story of new arrivals, and to share your own message of welcome, while teaching an essential skill for establishing independence.
Transit trainings are every Thursday and Friday morning from 9am - 12pm. Do not have to commit for both days. Can be one day or the other.
