Description: The Student & Program Support volunteer (SPS) will be placed in the Adult Education team and will work along our Adult Education Staff to support adult students and teachers. Duties can include: assisting teachers during and/or outside of class, conducting students assessments, conducting student outreach, and program promotion and evaluation (see more details under duties).
Schedule: Somewhat flexible, will be discussed with the volunteer
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Assist teacher(s) during class with translation, tutoring, and class management
- Assist with intake or testing of students as needed
- Collect, evaluate,and organize examples of student work, and other student- related documents such as surveys for program improvement.
- Record and maintain program data related to their project for use by program managers.
- Participate in community networking and outreach efforts with team staff and evaluate strategies to determine most effective
- Help revise and organize the department’s training tools
- Potentially create or update short instructional videos or write ups describing processes as needed
Requirements:
- Bilingual (Spanish and English)
- Strong interest in and commitment to working with the Spanish speaking/ immigrant community through the lens of Adult Education.
- Detail Oriented
- Strong communication and decision making abilities
- Readiness to work autonomously and on team driven projects
- Strong and effective time management skills
- GED or High school Diploma; Some college
- Comfort and Knowledge of basic computer programs (Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Searching, Google Drive.)
Desired but not required Experience:
- Comfort speaking to and/or facilitating groups.
- Group Facilitation, Teaching, or Tutoring
- Prior volunteer work with ESL students and / or with computer literacy students.
Training Provided:
- Testing and assessment
- Outreach and Organizing students
- MRNY’s administrative protocols & computer software
- General MRNY Orientation
Benefits: The volunteer will receive training and hands-on experience in a structured and well supported environment while enhancing the service experience of our members. The members will help improve accessibility to MRNY currently provided services.
By the end of the service term the volunteer will have increased their networking opportunities and gained knowledge in:
- Intro to Adult Education Program management
- Basics of outreach, intake, program evaluation
- MRNY’s administrative protocols & computer software
- Modern technology and software used for research, community training, program evaluation, outreach and intake
- Program Design and Planning
- Effective teamwork
