The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's largest fundraising event is the Great Strides Walk. The Honolulu event is scheduled for June 3, 2017 at Kapiolani Park. Attendence at the event on June 3 is not required for this opportunity.
We are seeking individuals to help coordinate and plan the event. Co-chairs would help to find sponsors, seek volunteers, publicize the event, find entertainment, and identify ways to grow the event.
In 2008, Honolulu Great Strides raised $6000. In 2016, we raised $22,000. More than 90% of the money raised at Great Strides goes to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's efforts to find a cure for the 30,000 Americans with this rare, genetic disease. In 1955 when the Foundation was formed, children with cystic fibrosis rarely lived to attend school. In 1989, the gene responsible for the disease was identified. In 2012, the first drug to treat the underlying cause of the disease was approved, but only works for a small fraction of those with the disease. In 2015, 50% of those with cystic fibrosis in the US were 18 years or older. We still have a long way to go.
