The Learners Lab (TLL) is a charitable workforce training and fiscal sponsorship resource center. This new charity needs a part time volunteer to serve in the capacity as Senior Director or Deputy CFO. This role will be responsible for project and program accounting, production of financial reports, funds management, business planning, ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting obligations, as well as providing guidance to TLL’s leadership in the absence of the our volunteer CFO. Roughly 20 hours per week is anticipated as a start.

We are looking to hire someone to work with and on behalf of our volunteer CFO. While we sponsor other start-ups, we are still in start-up mode with our own operations. Part of this role is also to help us care for and advise our fiscal sponsorship awardees, customers, and other stakeholders. For example, our awardees require our assistance in establishing policies and procedures, developing their org structure, finding and managing grants, addressing the financial, and accounting needs of their new entities, initially preparing/filing financial reports, setting up operational infrastructures and their leadership, managers and board. So we need your help to make this happen.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS in Accounting or related field, Master's business finance is preferred
  • 3-5 years’ experience in tax exempt budgeting, accounting, project accounting with 5-10 years finance & accounting is even better.
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Know-how to complete and file, 1099's, 571L's, sales & use tax reports, all federal & state tax reports,
  • Advanced knowledge of or more accounting/finance tools including QuickBooks, NetSuite
  • Experience managing critical projects such as system implementations, system upgrades, or linking systems
  • Ability to interview awardees & customers, review financial records, and build out cash flow models
  • Experience in audit tax reporting, & tax preparation where needed
  • Experience building and managing budgets and forecasting

  • Ability to draft customized financial policies and procedures for awardees & customers
  • Ability to council/advice on general & best accounting practices
  • Fiscal Sponsorship accounting, bank sub-account reporting, loan accounting, compliance & other requirements, grants management, etc.,
  • Advanced Excel skills, willingness to learn forms development (PDF & Excel, not web)

Preference Given for knowledge of or experience in non-profit & charitable finance AND tax management, bilingual or multi-linguistic skills, or the willingness to learn and help our awardees do the same!

Anticipated tasks as we expand revenue programming and onboard more TLL awardees:

  • Provide timely, top-level support to awardees & customers.
  • Help/advise/mentor awardees both with & without accounting staff.
  • Proactively anticipate awardees, programmatic, & operational needs
  • Design, propose and/or implement solutions to current, future, and anticipated challenges & risks.
  • Lead and review monthly closes and produce monthly financials.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timely completion of all assigned work and keep abreast of portfolio for non-assigned work that benefit for shared attention with CFO or CEO/CRO.
  • Help CEO/CRO develop Finance Portfolio Management Time/Pipeline for managing timelines, pipeline and deliverables for all projects, program, revenue generating endeavors, tax & accounting reporting, other (current/future) financial obligations, and TLL operations

CPA welcome, as long as it’s understood this begins as a volunteer role and reports to the executive office, and is designed to become part time-paid (stipend) then permanent position (full or part time, remote, onsite or flex) by mid-late spring or as soon as funds permit.

TLL is currently staffed by a small team of volunteer serving in interim & acting capacities. They will be appointed to their respective positions once all key the staffing positions have been fully funded.

A search is also underway for an volunteer Chief Sponsorship & Development Services (CSDS) to help develop and ultimately lead TLL sponsor and development operations. Well qualified applicants will be contacted immediately.

The Learners Lab Foundation Tax Exempt Small Business Collaborative (TLLF-TSBC)(tm) is a charitable foundation and serves as the lead startup & small business incubator for is parent, The Competence Group, LLC. It began as a pre-teens volunteer work, morphed into a SolProp during college, then LLC during COVID, never stopped doing the volunteer work which has now become various charities.

Thanks to the 2017-18 Govt shutdown, then COVID in 2020 with no real recovery in between, The Learners Lab Foundation(tm) been quietly transitioning from a small national Fiscal Sponsorship into the nations first Economic Development Enterprise and Multi-Lingual Workforce Training Incubator for 501cs.
