The Physics Lab invites students to explore and teach physical science through hands-on interactive exhibits and demonstrations in the Physics Lab, Laser/Holography Lab, and the Turbine Hall. In this position, you have two primary roles: (1) to facilitate the visitors’ learning experiences with informal interactions, demonstrations, and lab activities and (2) to assist with maintenance of the labs.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Interactwith visitors to help them explore and learn from exhibits, demonstrations, and lab activities.
- Share accurate science and museum information with guests.
- Supervise the lab when Senior Educator is absent.
- Perform demos outside the lab during scheduled classes.
- Maintain integrity and appearance of hall and lab exhibits on a daily basis.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.
- Help train, coach, and supervise Physics Lab volunteers.
- Be prepared to be trained and work in other science halls or labs as needed.
- Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Educator.
Knowledge/skills:
- Fundamental understanding of physical science and physics.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to present science process and content in an engaging way to a broad age range.
- Ability to take initiative.
- Must be dependable and punctual, and be willing to commit to a schedule.
- Must present a professional personal appearance.
- Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Hall Educators.
Education and work experience:
- Working toward or having a BA/BS in science, education, or communications, with college coursework in science.
- Experience working with public in formal or informal educational settings highly desirable.
Time Commitment:
Minimum of 8 hours/week for at least three months. Extension of internship or work-study position negotiable.
Position Type:
Internship or Work-Study. Work-Study positions are only available to students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study funding as part of their financial aid package. Please contact your academic institution to determine your eligibility.
