The Food Science program at OMSI connects visitors with various topics related to the science of food. Through topics in biology, chemistry, physics and engineering, OMSI Food Science reveals the many diverse and scientific processes behind the food we eat. You will have the opportunity to assist with the maintenance and development of the program and facilitate visitors’ learning experiences with informal interactions, demonstrations, and activities. At the supervisor’s discretion, some of the intern’s time may be spent on developing new content and assisting at special Food Science-related events.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Assist in the development, presentation, and resetting of daily food science activities.
- Interactwith visitors to help them explore and learn from exhibits and lab activities.
- Share accurate science and museum information with visitors.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors.
- Help train, coach, and supervise Food Science volunteers.
- Be prepared to be trained and work in other science halls or labs as needed.
- Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Food Science educator.
Knowledge/skills:
- Basic knowledge of food science and interest in science education.
- Strong communication, customer service and problem solving skills.
- Able and eager to present science process and content in an engaging way to a broad age range.
- Self-directed and willing to take initiative.
- Able to stand for extend periods of time.
- Must be dependable and punctual, and be willing to commit to a schedule.
- Must present a professional personal appearance.
Education and work experience:
- Working toward or having a BA/BS in science or education with college course work in science.
- Experience working with the public in formal or informal educational settings highly desirable.
Time Commitment:
Minimum of 8 hours/week for at least three months. Extension of internship or work-study position negotiable.
Position Type:
Internship or Work-Study. Work-Study positions are only available to students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study funding as part of their financial aid package. Please contact your academic institution to determine your eligibility.
