ORGANIZATION: Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)

OMSI Design Lab Interns and Work-Study participants have the opportunity to facilitate interactive activities that inspire people to engage with tinkering, technology, and problem solving through innovation and creative thinking.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Encourage visitors of varied ages and backgrounds to explore and learn through activities, projects, and demos.
  • Introduce visitors to tools, art forms and technologies, such as a 3D printer.
  • Share accurate science and museum information with guests.
  • Maintain integrity and appearance of hall and lab exhibits on a daily basis.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.
  • Participate in the planning, development, and presentation of hall and lab-based activities and demonstrations.
  • Be prepared to be trained and work in other science halls or labs as needed.
  • Must be dependable and punctual, and be willing to commit to a schedule.
  • Must present a professional personal appearance.
  • Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Design Lab educator

Knowledge/skills:

  • Interest in exploring new technologies, but with enthusiasm for craft and real materials.
  • Comfortable with aiding in the facilitation of visitor-led and visitor-centered experiences.
  • Experience working with tools and/or troubleshooting technology.
  • Self-motivated with good problem-solving, judgment, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to present science process and content in an engaging way to a broad age range.
  • Passionate about tinkering, building, and making things.
  • Proficient in tech or maker skills and interested in sharing that knowledge.
  • Excited about teaching and learning through play and experimentation.
  • Able to stand for extend periods of time.
  • Must be dependable and punctual, and be willing to commit to a schedule.
  • Must present a professional personal appearance.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Working toward or having a BA/BS in science, engineering, education, art or communications.
  • Experience working with the public, including children and families, in formal or informal educational settings highly desirable.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum of 8 hours/week for at least three months. Extension of internship or work-study position negotiable.

Position Type:

Internship or Work-Study. Work-Study positions are only available to students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study funding as part of their financial aid package. Please contact your academic institution to determine your eligibility.

Volunteers support the operation of five exhibit halls and eight science labs and hundreds of interactive exhibits and hands-on demonstrations.
