OMSI’s Chemistry Lab is the first hands-on wet chemistry lab experience in a science museum in the nation. You will have the opportunity to assist education staff in the maintenance and development of the Chemistry Lab; facilitate visitors’ learning experiences with informal interactions, demonstrations, and activities; and may have opportunities to assist with teaching classes or other special events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Assist in the presentation, maintenance, and possible development of daily activities.

* Maintain the integrity and appearance of lab activities and exhibits.

* Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.

* Interact with visitors to help them explore and learn from exhibits and lab activities.

* Share accurate science and museum information with visitors.

* Help train, coach, and supervise Chemistry Lab volunteers.

* Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Educator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

* Interest in chemistry and science education.

* Familiarity and comfort with chemical handling and chemical safety.

* Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.

* Self-directed and willing to take initiative.

* Able to stand for extended periods of time.

* Must present a professional personal appearance.

* Must be dependable, punctual, and willing to commit to a schedule.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

* Working toward or have completed a BA/BS in chemistry, other science field, or education preferred, with college coursework in chemistry.

* Experience working with the public, including children and families, in formal or informal educational settings highly desirable.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Minimum of 8 hours/week for at least three months. Extension of internship or work-study position negotiable.

POSITION TYPE:

Internship or Work-Study. Work-Study positions are only available to students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study funding as part of their financial aid package. Please contact your academic institution to determine your eligibility.
