Lunch Buddies Tutoring at Jane Addams Elementary School
Who: HandsOn Suburban Chicago (HOSC) needs YOU to help low-income students get the academic support they need to succeed!
What: Lunch Buddies is an in-school tutoring program designed to strengthen the foundational reading and math skills of elementary school students (4th, 5th, and 6th graders). Volunteers will work with small groups of students and under the direction of volunteer leaders and/or program staff. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus but not required.
Where and When: Lunch Buddies Tutoring will begin in mid-to-late September and go through mid-May. We are now accepting applications to start tutoring in the spring. Volunteer tutors are needed on Mondays through Thursdays from 12 to 1 pm at Jane Addams Elementary School (1020 East Sayles Drive, Palatine, IL 60074). Choose and commit to one day or more per week for the school year. Mandatory orientation/training is TBD in late August. Volunteers must agree to a background check.
Why: Tutoring is a fun and rewarding experience. In spring 2017, students, on average, improved their automaticity with multiplication and division facts by nearly 10%. Moreover, volunteers have reported that working with students has boosted their self-confidence and given them an incredible sense of personal satisfaction.
