ORGANIZATION: Phoenix Zoo

Our Zoo Move & Groove 5k is "glowing" strong! That's right; the Phoenix Zoo's annual 5k race is back and better than ever in 2022, and we are looking for volunteers to keep the magic going!

We have a number of volunteer opportunities available with varying shift times, so there's something for everyone. Position descriptions and details are listed below.

Date: Sunday, January 16, 2022

Registration / Check-in volunteers

  • Time: 3:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m.
  • Position Description: You will distribute race day packets to the registered participants as they check-in for the 5K. Their packet will include bibs, shirt, tickets, and medals. Volunteers in this role will also assist with tear down of the area once registration has come to a close.
  • Attire: Black shirt (no logo or pictures) or volunteer shirt, knee-length shorts or pants and closed toed shoes. All volunteers should wear a face covering
  • Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time, be energetic, have an outgoing personality for our guests. Check-in volunteers must be able to problem-solve and multi-task.

Raceplace Route & Directional Assistance

  • Time: 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Position Description: Raceplaceis the organization that the Zoo partners with to put on the race. You will assist Raceplace with various needs on the race trail, such as helping guests with water stations, providing directional assistance throughout the event and other various tasks. Please note that if you are on the course, we will have designated vehicles drop you off and pick you up from your area and bring you back to the Zoo entrance. There may be a short period of time where you are waiting for your ride.
  • Attire: Black shirt (no logo or pictures) or volunteer shirt, knee-length shorts or pants and closed toed shoes. All volunteers should wear a face covering. Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time, carry items that weigh up to 40 lbs, have an outgoing personality for our guests.

Mascots

  • Time: 4:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m.
  • Position Description: You will be assigned an animal character mascot and a handler, who will be with you during your shift to help you navigate! You will either be assigned to a specific area or asked to roam and interact with guests before and after the race. You will motivate the athletes by cheering them along the 5k trail! You may also be asked to take pictures with families. You are required to be friendly with all guests, especially the kiddos, because they will love to see you! Signs for cheering and costumes will be provided.
  • Attire: Lightweight/breathable shirt, knee-length shorts, closed toed shoes. (Camel, Owl, Frog, Giraffe, Bunny, Walrus or Alligator)
  • Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time, withstand heat, be energetic, have an outgoing personality for our guests. Please stay hydrated!!

Mascot Handler

  • Time: 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Position Description: You will be assigned a mascot, who will either be assigned to a designated area or asked to roam. You will assist the mascot by taking pictures for families, curating, and cheering on the athletes as they run the 5k! You will also be asked to ensure that the mascot has water and takes breaks, as needed.
  • Attire: Black shirt (no logo or pictures) or volunteer shirt, knee-length shorts or pants and closed toed shoes. All volunteers should wear a face covering.
  • Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time, be energetic, have an outgoing personality for our guests.

Raffle Assistance

  • Time: 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
  • Position Description: Volunteers in this role will assist guests with putting their raffle tickets in the bins and guard items so they don’t "walk away." You will also be an event greeter, answering questions
  • Attire: Black shirt (no logo or pictures) or volunteer shirt, knee-length shorts or pants and closed toed shoes. All volunteers should wear a face covering.
  • Requirements: Must be able to endure long periods of standing, be energetic, have an outgoing personality for our guests.
