Pet Therapy for Veterans with The American Red Cross

ORGANIZATION: The American Red Cross of South Alabama (20 Counties)

Responsibilities:

  • Visit patients in medical treatment facilities or other approved locations.
  • Ensure that all baseline requirements are met pertaining to your animal's health, group liability insurance (not homeowners), training, and certifications.
  • Be responsible for the care and behavior of your animal.
  • Time Commitment: As mutually agreed upon.
  • Qualifications:
    • Complete additional security checks as required by the facility
    • Mimimum age of 18, with animal at least 1 year of age and in excellent health
    • Animal must be in good standing with certifying organization
  • Development Opportunities
    • Raise awareness to Red Cross services
  • Requirements: Orientation to the Red Cross and SAF
  • Our lead volunteer is certified to assess animals for AKC Canine Good Citizenship Certificate
  • Purpose: Provide trained and certified animals for visits in medical treatment facilities, wounded service member barracks, and other approved locations.

Description

The South Alabama Chapter serves 11 counties in South Alabama. We have offices in Atmore, Andalusia, Evergreen, Chatom, Lisman, Foley, and Monroeville. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
