Love photography? Have a passion for working with kids and teens? Pablove Shutterbugs, the signature arts program of The Pablove Foundation, teaches children living with cancer to develop their creative voice through the art of photography. We are currently seeking Volunteer Mentors in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties with experience in photography. Professionals and students of photography at the college level are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Mentors play an integral role in working with children and teens living with cancer by providing lessons in photography that cover fundamental concepts and techniques. Learning photography concepts alongside other kids undergoing similar experiences empowers our students to express themselves, exercise their independence, and practice new ways of seeing - all while having fun! Lessons are provided to pediatric cancer patients ages 6-18 years old each week at their home and in a classroom setting. There is no cost for students to participate in this program.

Mentors are paired one-on-one with a student and will help them grow artistically by encouraging them to practice and develop their creative eye. Volunteer mentors will also receive extensive training about working with families affected by cancer and will follow a basic photography curriculum established by Pablove Shutterbugs.

Our upcoming Los Angeles program is an 8-week course and starts February 4, 2017 and ends on March 25, 2017. The program consists of four (4) one and a half hour individual classes (at student's home), one (1) group field trip excursion and three (3) two-hour group classes taught by experienced Pablove Shutterbugs Teaching Artists and special guests at a location in Los Angeles, CA. Mentors are required to attend mentor meetings: orientation/training, mid-term check-ins, and a wrap-up session.

Prior experience working with kids ages 6-18 is a plus!

Mission Statement

The Pablove Foundation addresses childhood cancer through a unique art + science approach. Our mission is to improve the lives of children living with cancer through the arts and invest in underfunded, cutting-edge pediatric cancer research. Pablove Shutterbugs, our signature photography program for kids 6-18 living with cancer, has served nearly 1,500 students in eight cities across the country, and we’ve provided $2.8 million in seed funding for daring pediatric cancer researchers on the leading edge of their fields worldwide.

Description

Pablove's story began in 2008, when Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms Tumor, a rare form of childhood cancer. After 13 months of treatment, Pablo passed away just six days after his sixth birthday. The whole extended community affected by his diagnosis - friends, teachers, classmates and neighbors - wrapped its collective arms around him and his family. Their love inspired the start of The Pablove Foundation, and we've been fighting childhood cancer with love ever since.
