VOLUNTEERS

Team Diversionary is looking for some awesome Guest Stars to assist us. Gain valuable experience while helping us to reach our important audiences in the LGBT community and beyond. Our theatre has been working to tell Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender stories for over 25 years.

We’ll work around your schedule. We’ve got some great perks for our volunteers, including the opportunity to see some of the best live theatre in San Diego!

We have ongoing Guest Star (our name for volunteers) opportunities in assisting us with:

  • Box Office operations - daytime: includes handling incoming calls, ticket orders, and other small assigned tasks.
  • Box Office operations - nighttime: assisting with the check in and guest experience during the run of a show.
  • Special Events - being available for special events to help with set up & service.
  • Special Projects - on as needed basis, assisting with tasks around the theatre that could range from organizing costumes to cleaning the theatre to painting.
  • Festivals - Assisting with set up and manning of booths at festivals and street fairs. Writing - Literary assistance doing research for our InDepth articles, proofreading e-blasts and other literature we develop.

All of these opportunities are awarded with tickets to shows and opportunities to attend special invitation-only behind the scene events.

USHERS

We use ushers for special events, our Main Stage shows and cabarets, as well as for Open Mondays series. Our ushers often tell us that Diversionary is one of the "best gigs" in town! For information email Stu Schwartz at ushercoordinator@diversionary.org and find out how to join in on the fun!

Mission Statement

Diversionary Theatre was founded to produce and develop theatre that explores the characters and
stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in all their complexity and diversity, while
impacting the larger cultural discussion.

Description

Founded in 1986, Diversionary Theatre produces plays and musicals and develops new works that
explore the issues, characters and stories of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
community in all its complexity and diversity. We are the 3rd oldest continuously producing LGBT
theatre in the United States and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Diversionary Theatre was founded at the beginning of the AIDS crisis in order to bring to light important social issues that impact the quality of life of LGBT people. The constantly shiftingCalifornia and national debates over marriage equality, adoption rights, discrimination, bullying, andmilitary service all speak to the need for Diversionary's mission. As the social climate rapidly changes,we work to foster conversation in the community about how the narrative of LGBT people fitsalongside that other groups in the community. By exploring stories of what sets our culture and historyapart, as well as stories that focus on LGBT people's humanity rather than their sexuality, we are in a unique position in which we can help bridge the gaps of cultural understanding.

In 1994, the theatre moved into its current home. In 2006, we received two gifts from the estate of Dr. Fritz Klein, a longtime Diversionary board member. He left us the building that houses the theatre, including the accompanying mortgage, and our first permanent endowment. In the 28 years since we were founded, Diversionary is proud of the reputation we have established by producing 137 quality mainstage productions and dozens of other arts events, nurturing new works
of LGBT theatre, providing a home to some of San Diego's most talented established and up-andcoming
artists, regularly collaborating with local arts and LGBT organizations, providing
contextualization to and fostering conversations sparked by our productions, and involving the wider
community in our mission. We proudly continue building on that solid foundation.
