ORGANIZATION: Volunteer Center of Sonoma County

Do you have an authentic interest in working with and helping seniors? Are you comfortable speaking to and leading discussion in small groups? Being a certified coach for Sonoma County’s A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls (MOB) program may be just the volunteer opportunity you’re looking for.

MOB incorporates simple chair exercise and addresses psychological, lifestyle and environmental challenges to balance through group discussion and problem-solving activities. Each program is eight sessions, usually held weekly or twice a week. Each class is two hours long.

Classes are led by volunteer lay coaches who work in teams of two and are expected to lead two MOB programs within a year of their training. The next training is Wed., March 29 8 am-1 pm and Thurs., March 30, 8 am - noon at the county offices on Westwind Blvd, Santa Rosa (must attend both days).

This nationally recognized, award-winning program has helped hundreds of Sonoma County seniors to enjoy healthier, more active, safer and better balanced lives.

Description

Work in the classroom under the direction of the teacher helping students with reading and/or math. This requires a commitment of 1 hr./wk for a school semester. Volunteers must be fingerprinted.

The Literacy Connection Academic Mentor program has just completed 12 years of recruiting, training, and preparing volunteers to go into the classrooms of Sonoma County K-12 schools. This year 250 volunteers worked in 30 different schools helping students in the regular classroom and in the after-school programs. One-on-one help is sometimes the only way that students who are also learning English as a second language can do their work. Sometimes the student has experienced so much failure in his school life that he is reluctant to participate in class activities. He has lost self esteem. Volunteer helpers give that student a no-risk opportunity to experience success - even one word at a time.
