DBAS Camp 2015
All our clients and their SSPs (Support Service Providers) along with other support staff gather for a photo on the last day.

Deaf-Blind Access of the South is a non-profit organization whose mission is to organize a camp/retreat event every two years for the Deaf-Blind adults in Georgia and the surrounding area. This event provides a rare and invaluable experience for those with a dual-sensory loss to get together, share their skills and discuss their educational and technological needs. To learn more, please visit our new website: dbascamp.org

We are an ALL volunteer organization with roughly 17 persons on the committee working to have yet another successful Camp/Retreat in October of 2017. Even with 17 volunteers, we are running "lean". Each of us needs to mentor backups for ourselves in the event we become unable to continue. We need to add an additional Activity Planner, Meal Planner, Transporation Planner. We want to grow the next generation of leadership - and that includes mentoring an Assistant Director and Director.

About Deaf-Blind Access of the South

Location:

1010 Camden Ct., Atlanta, GA 30327, US

Mission Statement

We provide the opportunity for adults who are deaf-blind (or low-vision/hard-of-hearing) the chance to get together with others like themselves and experience a 5-day camp/retreat every other year.

Description

Every 2 years Deaf-Blind Access of the South (DBAS) offers adults who are Deaf-Blind (or Hard-of-Hearing/Low-vision in any combination) a rare chance to get together with others like themselves and have Support Service Providers (SSPs) to enable them to communicate effortlessly.

DBAS activities and workshops require the assistance of volunteers with highly specialized training - called Support Service Providers. SSPs serve as sighted guides, communication facilitators, and interpreters. The entire event costs approximately $20,000 - which includes food, lodging, transportation to/from the airport for some, local transportation to field trips, speaker fees, adapted equipment and so much more.

Our campers pay the vast majority of the cost to attend and DBAS volunteers hold fundraisers, apply for grants, request donations, etc. to earn the remainder needed to hold the event.

Our next Camp/Retreat will be held Oct. 10-15, 2017 in Warm Springs, GA. and we are currently hard at work planning and fundraising to ensure it is another success.
