ORGANIZATION: YourWords STL

  • 4 people are interested

YourWords STL uses one-on-one tutoring, creative writing workshops, and collaborative writing projects to amplify the voices of St. Louis youth.

We work to bridge racial, cultural, and economic divides, by honing the ability of people to tell their stories, while providing opportunities for the ears and hearts of the community to listen.

In our first year of operation (2015-2016), we worked with a fantastic, motivated group of boys and young men aged 16-19 at Marygrove in Florissant. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for children all over St. Louis who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. The campus is located on 44 acres of greenery, overlooking the Missouri river.

We will continue to work with this group in our second year (2016-2017). We will be at Marygrove from 4-5:30PM on Wednesdays for the fall and spring semesters. We are also adding a second main location in 2017, as well as facilitating multiple collaborative projects between students from all over St. Louis.

Each week we do about 30 minutes of general homework help according to the student's needs that day, followed by a 45-minute writing exercise led by one of our published authors/poets. Tutors do NOT need to be experienced writers or teachers. We are seeking a wide variety of backgrounds; an enthusiasm for reading and writing and compassion for under-served youth are the basic requirements for tutoring with YourWords STL.

With programming, tutor coordination, grant writing, and fundraising, we are stretched a bit thin to maintain a solid web presence. We are very excited about our rebranding that will be complete in the next few months, as we work with Atomic Dust on a new website, logo, and vision. We are hoping to find volunteers to help us maintain this momentum through our social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Please email if you are interested in volunteering to boost YourWords STL's social media footprint!

Description

YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in underserved areas of St. Louis. We partner with local organizations to provide workshops for their populations.

We partnered with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn from 2015-2022. Starting in 2022, our tutoring has moved to Clay Community Resource Center in the Hyde Park neighborhood, offering tutoring twice weekly. The tutor volunteers work with students each week on homework as needed for school.

We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations throughout St. Louis. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.

YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 60-minute weekly tutoring sessions. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
