ORGANIZATION: Benson Polytechnic High School

LÁMP:ARA: Latinos Adelante Mentor Program: Apoyo Recursos Académicos at Benson High school is an academic success and retention program which pairs Latino Freshman and Sophomores with College Access Coaches from nearby colleges campuses to offer them personalized mentorship, academic support professional guidance, college preparation and leadership trainings.

Throughout the 2016-2017 school year Benson Polytechnic High School will be offering Latino Freshmen and Sophomores the opportunity to work with College Coaches- volunteer academic support and tutors. These College Coaches will meet with students in small groups to assist Benson Latino students with their homework, connect students to volunteer/internship opportunities, and offer college and career guidance. These sessions will have a strong emphasis on college and career exploration, study skills/critical thinking, and civic engagement activities. By providing information, guidance, and encouragement, these College Coaches will help nurture students’ post-high school aspirations and prepare them for college and the work force by advising them how to make successful transitions.


Coaches would generally meet after school (3:15pm) on Wednesdays and Thursdays, however there is some flexibility to meeting with students during other times and days.

College Access Coaches need to:

  • Be attending a college or university
  • Fill out an application (available on the website)
  • Be able to complete at background check to volunteer at Portland Public Schools
