Program Description

The Self-Sufficiency Program at the Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) provides those who are affected by domestic violence basic job-readiness skills to enter today’s workforce and to gain employment. As part of our eight-week program to help clients become self-sufficient in their everyday life, our instructors teach English and Computer classes during the winter, fall, summer and spring semesters. Volunteers will provide one-on-one or group tutoring sessions to students who need help with homework, to learn the materials covered in class, or to practice and retain their knowledge. Also, tutors may develop their own or create new teaching lessons for students!

Volunteer Title: English Tutor

Summary of Position

Provide one-on-one or group English lessons on grammar, pronunciation, spelling, everyday life phrases, and etc. Tutors will identify students’ specific needs and what they have to practice to gain English-proficiency. Ability to communicate clearly and slowly for students to understand is essential.

Responsibilities

• Provides one-on-one or English group tutoring/conversations with 2-3 adult second-language learners in one setting.
• Follow-up with students who are currently taking English classes to help them review what they have learned in class or to catch up on their lessons.
• Track student progress to document what they have learned or need to work on in the next tutor session.
• You may develop your own instructional curriculum/materials to teach resume writing or job interview skills that may not be introduced to students in their classes.
• Create a safe learning experience for all students

Required Qualifications

• Ability to keep ALL personal information that students shared with you confidential, such as their names and where they live (avoid sharing information with friends, family & social media)
• Trustworthy and respectful
• At least 21 years old or older with no criminal background
• Currently enrolled in college as a student OR have completed your bachelors/ master’s degree OR have two or more years of experience teaching English
• Attended our Volunteer Orientation

Preferred Education/Skills:

• Bi-lingual in Korean and English is preferred, but not required
• College degree in English or TESOL is preferred, certification in ESL/ESOL is a plus
• Prior experience teaching adults or children
• Possesses a friendly demeanor and patience for students to learn at their own pace
• Able to communicate to students clearly so they understand your instructions
• Have a sense of empathy towards victims or individuals who have experienced trauma

Schedule/Time Commitment

• Begins January until June 2017 (tentative dates)
• Commit at least four months of volunteer service
• Meet with students at least once a week for 45 minutes to 1 hour outside of classroom time when classes are in-session and during semester breaks
• Attend a bi-weekly meeting (10-20 minutes) with Volunteer Coordinator after tutor session.
• Have a flexible schedule; Monday to Fridays, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm OR be available for one weekday
