Application Deadline: ASAP Position: 4 Part-time, Unpaid Timeframe: January-April 2017 Description
Portland Child Art Studio & Doodles Academy have partnered to create a unique internship opportunity for educators & students interested in teaching art to elementary students. This internship trains educators to provides an art education to students that enhances children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Doodles Academy and the Portland Child Art Studio share a common theory: that art can give innumerable benefits to students, but that all art programs are not created equal. Both organizations provide students with art lessons that engage and enable each student to problem solve in their own way, developing the critical, flexible, or creative problem solving skills that can be gestated in a process oriented art room, and maximizing their perceptual development.
While the organizations share a philosophy, they approach it in different ways.
Throughout this internship, students will assist in weekly classes, alternating between the Portland Child Art Studio and Doodles Academy, and will therefore be exposed to the variety of teaching techniques and styles available to them while still maintaining an environment that supports child-centered learning. Interns will twice be responsible for teaching a class of their own design.
In addition, through readings and discussion, interns will receive a foundation in perceptual development, as well as gain an understanding of different ways art can benefit learning across all subject matters, and how best to maximize those effects when teaching.
This opportunity would be great for art students who are interested in art education, or general education students interested in learning best-practices that they can use when bringing art into their classroom.

The Portland Child Art Studio is dedicated to supporting the perceptual development of children through artistic learning, in a studio environment integral to the learning process.
PCAS honors the idea that a child’s art reflects their engagement with a natural creative process that is unique to each child. PCAS believes in the power of artistic learning, experimentation, exploration, play, and discovery as the foundation upon which children will begin to build a life-long relationship with art.
The studio provides weekly classes for kids ages 3-14, including homeschool, afterschool, and preschool age classes, as well as Girls Art Clubs for various ages. PCAS provides Open Studio times twice a week for families to use the studio space as an art educational resource and provides an art elective program for middle school students at Skyline Elementary School. PCAS also commits to curating two yearly child art exhibitions in the community in celebration of child art. http://portlandchildart.org/index.html
