Be a Hospice Volunteer

Hospice care creates an environment of comfort and dignity for both patients and their families. Hospice Volunteers have an amazing opportunity - their helping hand and calming presence can make an enormous difference in the lives of others.

If you have a passion for caring for others and are looking for a way to make a difference in people’s lives, we hope you’ll consider becoming a hospice volunteer.

What's a Hospice Volunteer Do?

The activities you will do as a Amedisys hospice volunteer may come in many forms. From reading at a patient’s bedside and knitting lap blankets, to running errands and joining pet therapy programs - there's a wide range of possibilities. Common volunteer activities often include:

Patients’ Areas of Interest
  • Reading
  • Playing chess, cards, board games
  • Knitting, scrapbooking, painting and other art projects
  • Writing letters
  • Helping to create scrapbooks or life reviews
  • Providing healing therapies (reiki, massage, etc. - licensure and/or certification required)
Household Tasks
  • Running errands
  • Walking pets
  • Grocery shopping
  • Light meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping
Emotional Support
  • Providing respite for caregivers
  • Weekend support phone calls to patients and families
  • Sitting vigil and comforting patients as they are actively dying
  • Providing spiritual support when requested
  • Visiting and comforting patients

What are the Requirements?

Amedisys strives to provide quality services to the patients and families we serve, and it’s our philosophy that Hospice Volunteers are part of our caregiver team. To maintain quality care for our patients and families, we have a few requirements of our hospice volunteers:

  • We prefer a six-month commitment of 1-4 hours of service a week
  • Three references
  • A background check
  • A statement of health from your physician
  • An agreement to protect patient privacy (HIPAA/ confidentiality)
  • Parental consent form for volunteers under the age of 18

In addition, for volunteers who wish to have direct patient contact, we require the following:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test - to be arranged by Amedisys
  • The option to receive the vaccination series for Hepatitis B

What Training is Provided?

Becoming a Hospice Volunteer can feel like a big step, and we’re here to help. That’s why we support all our volunteers with an orientation and training program that helps you know what to do. You’ll learn about:

  • How the hospice care team works, and your role in it
  • Helpful hints for being a successful volunteer
  • The psychological, social and spiritual needs of hospice patients
  • How to provide grief and bereavement support
  • Communication skills and managing stress
  • Patient privacy and other regulations
