Darius McCrary at Teen Summit

Help our youth learn important lessons and give back to their community through volunteerism! Our students have lots of ideas to make change happen, so we want to use them as launching points to create service learning projects!

As a service learning coordinator, you will connect the students with whom we work (ages 10-19) to service-learning opportunities in their communities! You will explore and research ways in which students can make a difference by communicating with community agencies and partners!

Service learning is important because it teaches our kids how to give back while learning something along the way!

Examples of successful service learning projects (borrowed from goodcharacter.com):

1) Students developed questions that were asked at the local "Foods with Friends" gathering. The students interviewed the seniors to learn about their community and then put on a skit for the seniors to show them what they had learned. They followed up with decorated "Thank You" cards to show their appreciation.

2) Students learning about animals went out into a nature center and took care of a butterfly nest. They then performed a play for other students and their parents dealing with what they had learned about butterflies at the nature center.

***Must be available week days, as we are open 9a-5p, M-F***

Please don't hesitate to apply! Training will be provided, and you will be supported by an incredible staff grateful for your help!

Description

You can contact us at info@flon.org!

FLON was established in Kansas City, MO in 1996 and incorporated in 1999 by Diana Clemons as a nonprofit corporation. Ms. Clemons met with local leaders, elected and appointed, parents, school officals, community and business leaders. She went to these meetings asking what the youth in the community needed most and how she could serve them. The most critical unmet needs from meetings and focus groups were how to prepare youth for the leadership that the community would need in the future. Also programs that would tech teens to set boundaries from risky behaviours prevention. FLON implements evidence- based primary prevention curriculum education that incluedes alcohol, tobacco, drug, and violence and sexual activity and abstinence education.
