An Internship Like No Other: Help Build a Groundbreaking Program!
(Part-Time, Graduate Level)

At Child & Family Connections (CFC), we believe that work is most rewarding when it is aligned with the organization’s mission and the individual’s goals and interests. To achieve these mutual goals, CFC’s interns have the opportunity to work on unique projects that they help craft in order to delve into unique areas that are of interest to them.

Our staff all work virtually and have the flexibility to make their own hours. We meet around the city but come together in and out of the classroom in support of our programs. Our interns are a critical part of our team and are given significant levels of responsibility and can often make their own hours. If you have a favorite coffee shop where you’re comfortable working, no problem. CFC is founded on recovery principles of self-direction so the ability (and interest) to work independently is required. This lean model allows us to dedicate nearly all of our funding to help families at risk.

We request at least five hours per week, but we can craft the internship to suit the student’s academic requirements and schedule. The internship commitment can range from one semester to a full year. We are happy to work with educational organizations and to serve as preceptors if requested.

This is a rare opportunity to do meaningful work while learning how a nonprofit operates, from fieldwork to outcomes and everything in-between.

The Role

In 2017, CFC begins development on our most important effort to date: a groundbreaking new program, the first of its kind in the U.S.-SafeTogether.

We believe we can head off the adverse effects of custody loss in many families living with parental mental illness by keeping children in the home in the first place. We will teach parents with mental illnesses, step-by-step, how to keep their children safe, in the home, and out of foster care during a parent’s psychiatric emergency.

There is a great amount of work ahead as we hire partners to help with development, marketing, training, analytics, and more.

The intern will work closely with our executive director, helping to oversee the many facets of the project and ultimately of the program itself. Think of this as an entrepreneurial start up positions, juggling several tasks at once, taking meetings, sitting in on board meetings, presenting the program to potential sponsors, and keeping everything moving forward to meet our goals of launching the pilot in the fall 2017. You’ll need to be

  • Business savvy

About Child & Family Connections

Location:

314 N. 12th Street, Suite 304, Philadelphia, PA 19107, US

Mission Statement

Child & Family Connections improves the lives of families living with parental mental illness in meaningful ways--through education, advocacy, and support.

Description

When 9-year-old Charlotte asked to meet other kids who have a parent with a mental health condition, it was a milestone in a journey that began a decade earlier with her father’s institutionalization, destitution, and near-death from his bipolar disorder.

Inspired by her request, they co-founded Child & Family Connections, Inc. (CFC), the nation’s first nonprofit that exclusively supports families living with parental mental illness by empowering them to handle adversity and build resiliency.

We are privileged to be a part of the process of helping families heal as Charlotte’s request continues to transform lives.

People We Serve

  • We serve low-income families living with parental mental illness in the Philadelphia region.
  • 100% of adults are parents (single, married couples, adoptive, foster, grandparents) diagnosed with a serious mental illness, many with co-occurring disorders, often legally disabled, ranging in age from 17 to 73.
  • 60% of their children, ages birth to young adult, have mental health challenges of their own.
  • 83% of families are African-American,
  • 67% live below the federal poverty line, with a median annual income of $13,000.
  • While all have some degree of English proficiency, 58% have not completed a high school level of education.
