Program: Heartland Tree Alliance

Name of Internship: Heartland Tree Alliance intern

Length of Internship: January - May, 2017

Basic Internship Description: This internship supports Heartland Tree Alliance (HTA) to promote a healthy community forest by training volunteers to plant and maintain trees in the Kansas City metro. This position would support the Kansas City, Missouri Street Tree planting initiative, which aims to plant 500 trees in residential right-of-way areas between Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 The intern would work with the program manager and program associate to canvas residential tree planting locations as well as volunteer coordination and door-to-door recruitment.

Major Responsibilities: Identify appropriate tree planting locations in Kansas City, Missouri. Communicate the importance of trees and get buy-in from adjacent property owners to care for the tree for a 2-year period. Coordinate and recruit volunteers for tree plantings and assist with volunteer oversight during the workday. Track and utilize ArcGIS to inventory newly planted trees as well as assist in contract reporting. Recruiting and direct engagement will occur in Fall and Spring. Program support will occur in Winter.

Skills/Experience Needed: Strong written and oral communication skills. Basic computer skills with ArcGIS experience preferred. Experience working with volunteers preferred. Ability to lift 50 pounds and willing to use own vehicle for transport when needed. Ability to work some weekends and evenings if needed.
