About

Purpose: Volunteers will be a teaching assistant for our IT training course. This course covers both computer hardware and software topics as laid out in the industry standard CompTIA A+ certification curriculum. It includes both classroom and laboratory components. Students who successfully complete this course will be prepared to take the A+ certification exam. Successful students will be highly employable in the IT field as an IT Helpdesk or Jr. Systems Administrator. Result: Students of the class will be prepared for the CompTIA A+ certification exam. With this qualification, they will have higher chances of obtaining well-paying jobs. Suggested Activities: Answer students’ questions, promote a productive classroom dynamic, help the teacher with any set-up or clean-up as necessary. Measures: We will be tracking student satisfaction with the course as well as the number of students who pass the exam and who get jobs in the field. Qualifications: Volunteers should be comfortable working with adults who have basic levels of computer literacy and potentially limited English skills. Familiarity with CompTIA A+ certification requirements and/or material is preferred. Timeliness, flexibility, and strong organizational skills are essential. Supervision and Benefits: Volunteers will be supervised by a staff member at the Utah Refugee Education and Training Center and will also work with the volunteer leading the course. The volunteer will also have the chance to network with other professionals in tech-related fields from various companies, including Goldman Sachs. Timeframe: The course meets for two hours every Saturday from 4-6 pm and will run until March.
