For over 40 years, Union Settlement has provided Meals on Wheels to East Harlem's older residents that are often economically struggling and often living alone. Our Meals on Wheels program currently serves approximately 450 homebound seniors each day, and as of May 31, 2016, we have provided 143,313 meals to homebound seniors.
We're looking for volunteer groups or individuals to join a group to come in on one or more Saturdays of their choosing to help our Meals on Wheels program staff. Prior to the volunteer date, volunteers will be sent a training video and short quiz to help prepare them for participation with Meals on Wheels. Volunteers will help pack hot and cold meals and then join staff on deliveries where they will get to hand out meals to our clients and interact with the East Harlem community.
When: Saturdays from 9am to 12:30pm
Group Size: 6 to 8 people (4 people must be at least 21+ y/o to act as team leaders)
Where: Jefferson Senior Center, 2205 First Avenue (at E. 113th St.)
Interested individuals or groups should email volunteers@unionsettlement.org with the subject line "Saturday Meals on Wheels Volunteers," the number of volunteers you are signing up (if you're a group), and the Saturday(s) you would like to sign up for.

Mission Statement
Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.
Description
Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
