Mission Statement

The Giving Spirit provides immediate aid and a human connection to homeless individuals and families in Greater Los Angeles. We also educate volunteers and communities about the human face of homelessness with the goal of recognizing that homelessness does not mean hopelessness and lives can be improved and housing challenges resolved through community awareness and action.

Description

The Giving Spirit began in a living room 18 years ago. Lives served annually has grown from 40 in 1999 to over 5,200 in 2016, totaling more than 45,000 served since 1999. Over 13,000 volunteers have now participated in our outreach efforts, including 2,500 volunteers in 2016 alone. The Giving Spirit currently organizes two outreach events annually (summer and winter) where volunteers create and personally distribute survival kits containing essential items such as food, hydrating drinks, hygiene products, clothes, weather protection and more. The Giving Spirit and its leadership currently has approximately 50 active year round volunteer members who are organized into eight committees. Its an all-volunteer organization since its inception with no paid staff or office space. The Giving Spirit’s mandate of returning $.95 of every dollar back to the poor has remained in place and reflects its grassroots appeal to its volunteers and validates its impact to its loyal donors.
