NeighborLink Indianapolis is a small nonprofit that provides free home repairs to low-income seniors homeowners and homeowners with disabilities. We need a volunteer who can work with a team of us to return phone calls to clients in need, discuss the need over the phone, and record the problems. The work can be done from your home if you have email access.

Activities would include returning phone calls, scheduling visits by NeighborLink personnel, communicating information between staff members and volunteers, and helping clients get the help they need. You need to be comfortable working with seniors who can be confused and/or scared by the situation.

Objective: help allow clients to remain safely in their own homes by facilitating home repair help from NeighborLink, and making our communication with these clients work for them.

Time committment: one day per week but can vary as you are available. You work with a team and schedules vary to cover personal needs - we are all volunteers.

Mission Statement

NeighborLink Indianapolis mission is to help older adults and individuals with disabilities who own their own homes age in place safely and with dignity. We do this by providing home repair at no cost to the homeowner.

Description

We focus on home repairs that enable the homeowner to age in place safely, stabilize the home for years to come, and provide an improved appearance for the neighborhood at large. Many of the repairs we provide would be able to be done by the homeowner if they had the means or physical ability. By using volunteers we are able to help the homeowner as well as provide that intimate experience of truly being the hands and able-body for someone else.

Most older adults want to age in the most affordable home-the one they own. Aging in place allows older adults some level of autonomy and dignity over their own health and decisions. It allows many to remain within communities they’ve been a part of for decades. Social determinants of health, particularly including the ability to keep their home safe and accommodating to their physical needs, are among some of the most challenging barriers to aging in place.
