VITA Volunteers
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs are community based partnerships managed by the IRS that provide free tax return preparation assistance to low-to-moderate income taxpayers, seniors, people with disabilities and non-English speakers.
ALL POSITIONS REQUIRE TRAINING. IF you would like to come to a group training or schedule a one-on-one training, please contact Mallarie at mgainer@waynemetro.org or 313-324-7920 to schedule a training.
Available Positions:
Income Tax Preparer: Volunteer Income Tax Preparers establish the greatest degree of public trust by providing top quality service and upholding the highest ethical standards.
Tax Site Assistant: Provide support to the site and IRS tax law certified volunteer income tax preparer by completing the Intake/Interview process with taxpayer. The Tax Site Assistant interviews the taxpayer to ensure all necessary information is gathered to prepare an accurate return while upholding the highest ethical standards.
Greeter: Provide support to the site and IRS tax law certified volunteer preparers by screening all taxpayers to ensure they have all necessary information and documents required to complete a tax return. Greeters cannot answer any tax law questions unless they are certified in tax law.

- 873 households who are at-rick of homelessness maintain housing
- 2,701 households improve home energy efficiency through home repairs
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- 15 small Detroit-based organizations assisted with the Detroit Residents First Fund that works to elevate the voices of local Detroiters
Over the last four decades, the Agency’s budget has grown from $100,000 to over $100 million while continuing to maintain a low administrative rate (8%) that allows $.92 of every funded or donated dollar to be utilized for direct client services.
