The Village Method (TVM) needs your help in supporting our young scholars in their academic achievement during the 2023-24 school year. As an after school program, TVM operates on the school campus between the hours of 2:30pm - 5pm. You will help us provide an upbeat and culturally responsive learning environment so that our young scholars feel welcomed and affirmed.

As an Homework & Enrichment Assistant your goal is to support your pod of students in the successful completion of their homework while motivating them towards their highest level of academic performance. You along with other team members will work independently with a group of five to seven elementary school students to develop their positive academic self-identity.

Students will see you as a mentor and friend, families will praise you for helping them and their child, and TVM will provide you with ongoing training. We're building a pipeline from Cradle to College; College to Career; and Career to Community in order to complete the circle and strengthen our village. Join us!

Description

With your help we can develop a sustainable academic pipeline for youth from cradle to college, college to career and back to their community.

Our goal is to prepare underserved youth to graduate a four-year college, achieve both their educational and career dreams, and ultimately become productive members of their communities. Additionally, we aim to empower parents and concerned adults to advocate for their child and successfully navigate the educational system. We do this by including tutoring, mentoring, field trips, parent/student advocacy empowerment meetings, cultural celebrations, academic planning and success tracking sessions.

TVM wraps culturally responsive approaches into our model and no other programs exist in Union City that combine the following methodology with Afro-centric roots:

1. Strength-based Approach - TVM taps into the gifts and talents that children need for success.
2. Prevention/Intervention - Being Black is not a risk factor and, through proactive engagement, intervention is not a necessity.
3. Service Tracking - TVM maintains connection during the entire academic journey of the student while other programs are limited.
4. Holistic Community Engagement - We believe that the family, city, local businesses, residents and school district all have a stake in influencing positive life outcomes of a child.
