Public Counsel's Immigrants' Rights Project represents individuals seeking asylum in the United States based on past persecution or a well founded fear of future persecution on account of political opinion, race, religion, nationality or membership in a particular social group. Also assists immigrants who have been abused by a US citizen or permanent resident, and victims of trafficking and other crimes.

Volunteer Interpreter for Immigrants’ Rights Project

(You do not need to be a certified translator or interpreter to apply)

Background Information: The Immigrants’ Rights Project’s Refugee Families team provides assistance and representation to immigrant families, mostly mothers with children, in removal proceedings. The majority of the clients are eligible for Asylum, Withholding of Removal, and protection under the Convention against Torture, as well as other forms of relief such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U-Visa, and T-Visa. The volunteer interpreter will be assigned to a pro bono attorney located in or near Los Angeles to assist with case preparation, including client meetings and accompaniment to court hearings. The Los Angeles Immigration Court provides a certified interpreter for all hearings, and the volunteer will assist with attorney-client communication before or after the hearing. Law student volunteers may have an opportunity to assist with research or legal writing if desired.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be fluent in Spanish and English

Expected Time Commitment: Approximately 20-30 hours

Date Needed: Usually during regular business hours; some evenings or weekends depending on the case

Location: Los Angeles, CA (usually at pro bono attorney’s office)

Founded in 1970, Public Counsel is the public interest law office of the Los Angeles County and Beverly Hills Bar Associations. It is also the Southern California affiliate of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.Public Counsel's six law projects include legal specialties in Community Development and nonprofit law; Child Care law; Children's Rights including adoptions, guardianships, and dependent children's tort claims; Consumer Fraud including bankruptcy, home equity abuse and loan fraud; Homelessness Prevention serving youth, veterans and individuals seeking general relief; and Immigrants' Rights law with a focus on asylum and cases that invoke the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
