ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The Cultural Orientation Program provides thorough training to newly-arrived refugees on a variety of important topics including: transportation, resettlement benefits, public assistance, US laws and personal safety, housing, employment, education, immigration, financial management and the US healthcare system. These three-day classes are offered to refugees within their first weeks of being in America. Classroom curriculum is designed to be highly interactive, participant-focused, and easily adaptable to meet participants’ varying educational and linguistic backgrounds. All sessions are conducted in participants’ native language through the use of in-person interpreters.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Experience or demonstrated interest in education and training, preferably in a refugee or multicultural context.
* Available most Wednesdays and at least 10 hours a week
* Positive and upbeat demeanor while teaching preferred.
* Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in a multicultural environment.
* Organized with fine attention to detail and great flexibility.
* Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects and ability to work independently.
* Strong writing and editing skills.
* Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
INTERN LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
* Student will gain curriculum development experience and skills including: defining learning objectives, identifying and developing effective classroom teaching methods, and implementing assessment tools
* Student will build confidence and skills speaking publically and in a multicultural training environment
* Student will learn about the US refugee resettlement system and services and benefits available to refugees and asylees in the State of Ohio and across the US.
