The Red Cross responds to an average of two home fires every day throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. To help save lives, Red Cross volunteers are installing free smoke alarms in homes that need them. Smoke alarms have a tamper-resistant, 10-year lithium battery and are installed free of charge to residents. In Oregon this campaign is in partnership with the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
Volunteers are needed for this lifesaving community outreach effort. Individuals, local businesses and organizations are welcome to participate. Working in teams, volunteers canvass neighborhoods, install smoke alarms, review a fire safety and home hazard checklist and provide information about creating a fire escape plan with residents. Training is provided.
