ORGANIZATION: Community for Youth

We’re building a community. And we’d like you to be a part of it. Are you ready to join?

For more than 30 years, Community for Youth has been transforming high school students who are struggling - with school, with family, with their direction in life - into young adults who have confidence, determination, and self-awareness. Through our life skills curriculum and community supported 1:1 mentoring program, we offer one of the most unique programs in Seattle.

Every January, our annual Auction Gala raises more than $300,000 to support our local high school students. We invite you to volunteer at our 2017 Auction Gala on Saturday, January 28 , 2017 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel (1400 6 th Ave).

The following volunteer positions are available:

Registration & Cashiering (4:00 - 7:30pm and/ or 7:00 - 10:30pm) - These are the first and last faces our Auction guests see. Working in pairs, this team works to check everyone in, enter all sales throughout the night, and check people out at the end of the evening. This integral group ensures everyone feels welcome, pays , and goes home with their items.

Raffle (4:15 - 7:30pm) - The most outgoing role at the Auction! Working in pairs, raffle volunteers will move throughout the Silent Auction selling raffle tickets! Gift cards go to the pair that sells the most tickets!

Item Redemption (7:00 - 10:30pm) - After the Silent Auctions close, these volunteers work to package items and tag them with the winning bidder number. They set up the Auction retrieval area and assist guests with finding their items! Lots of standing and lifting is needed, as well as a strong attention to detail.

Dessert Dash (7:00 - 9:00pm) - These volunteers track and tag which dessert gets sold to which table and mark the dessert before turning it over to the event staff. This is a short special assignment, so volunteers doing this task may end up helping with Data Entry, Coat Checking, or Silent Auction Jobs.

Runners (6:15 - 10:00pm) - During the Live Auction, runners will take the winning bid sheet and a balloon (to tie to the chair) to the winning bidder for a signature, before taking it back to the cashiering station. This role will have you up and moving for most of the night and is a great way to get your 10,000 steps in!

Spotters (6:15 - 10:00pm) - Outgoing and energetic volunteers needed to support our auctioneer! Don some pom-poms, spot the bids, and encourage participation. You’ll be on your feet throughout the Live Auction, helping the auctioneer to see all corners of the room.

Silent Auction Closers (4:15 - 8:00pm) - Silent Auction Closers monitor the bid sheets on the tables ensuring that fresh ones are always available for the next bidder, look for early sales, and close according to announcements. You’ll be on your feet throughout the Silent Auction.

Coat Check (4:00 - 7:30pm or 7:00 - 10:30pm) This shift is long but you'll have a nice break in the middle when guests are not arriving or departing. Bring your customer service skills!

Volunteers will have the option of working one or more 2-4 hour shifts between the hours of 4:00pm and 10:30pm. Dinner will be provided.

Your contribution will help us to continue inspiring and supporting the social, emotional , and academic development of nearly 250 individuals through mentoring, learning experiences, and a powerful community.

Mission Statement

Community for Youth's mission is to inspire and support the social, emotional, and academic development of students through mentoring, learning experiences, and a powerful community.

Description

Community for Youth (CfY) is a Seattle-based non-profit with over 35 years of experience changing the lives of teens in South Seattle through 1-on-1 mentorship, community building, and facilitated skills workshops. CfY is not just a mentoring organization-we’re a community. CfY has a unique model that has students and mentors meeting weekly in a variety of group sizes, including 1-1, small groups, and whole community workshops.

CfY serves high school students, ages 14-19 from South Seattle communities, who have self-identified as wanting additional support and community in their lives. We receive referrals from school staff as well as conduct general recruitment in schools. All students opt into the program.

CfY offers a mentoring program that steps past traditional mentoring practices and offers a "Critical Mentoring" experience that centers the young person, addresses systems and environments that shape young peoples' experiences, and partners with each young person to provide opportunity brokering and social change. We leverage the mentoring relationship to resist racism and oppression and bring equity to our schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, and community.

Community Workshops and other CfY activities take place each week on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:30 for the duration of the academic year (September-June).
