The County of Los Angeles has more than 32,000 youth in the foster care system. That's not a typo. Los Angeles has more foster youth than the next highest STATE population, NY.
50% of foster youth will be homeless, incarcerated, and/or institutionalized upon leaving the foster care system.
42% of foster youth will not graduate high school
Only 3% of Foster Youth go to college.
Because they are changing placements so often, Foster youth can attend anywhere from 7-20 schools while in care.
80% of Death Row inmates have been in foster care.
YOU CAN HELP!!!
We are looking to grow and expand our board with new members from varied backgrounds. Board Members will work along side the Executive Director to promote the awareness of The Academy Project and its programs, generating funding to support and grow The Academy Project's programs. Board members will oversee the different aspects that make up a diverse and active not-for-profit organization, making sure that The Academy Project is fully in line with all regulations required of a 501c3 organization.
Board Members will oversee the development and implementation of The Academy Project's fund-raising and expansion plans, working year-round to form and maintain relationships with various organizations and businesses within our communities. The goal of The Board of Directors is to raise funds and create streams of ongoing support to sustain TAP’s various programs, services and expenses while shaping and growing the organization's reach and depth.
Along with the Executive Director and a team of volunteers, The Board will...
1. Oversee the development and implementation of TAP's development plan
2. Help develop partnerships and sponsorships with business, corporations, and private donors.
3.Shape and grow the reach and depth of the board of a new and visionary organization.

Mission Statement
The Academy Project provides support and resources to foster youth in South Los Angeles, CA through education, empowerment, and community.
Description
TAP provides an innovative, year-round, after-school alternative education engagement model. Students are guaranteed continued enrollment through to the completion of 8th grade regardless of placement changes.
The County of Los Angeles has more than 35,000 youth in the foster care system. That's not a typo. Los Angeles COUNTY has more foster youth than the STATE with the 2nd highest population, NY at 26,000 foster youth.
50% of foster youth will be homeless, incarcerated, and/or institutionalized upon leaving the foster care system.
Because they are changing placements so often, Foster youth can attend anywhere from 7-20 schools while in care.
The Academy Project (TAP) was born from the principle that keeping school as a point of stability can significantly help foster children succeed educationally while providing the opportunity to form strong relationships with peers and caring adults.
Engagement begins prior to the start of the school year with CAMP XAVIER, our 2 week summer day camp that culminates in a week-long sleep-away program partnered with UCLA Unicamp.
The Co-Op after school program meets every day and provides food, tutoring, and enrichment such as music appreciation and learning to play an instrument, and reading remediation partnered with a mentoring program.
