Mission Statement
LCN's mission is to empower adults to improve literacy skills or learn English as a foreign language. Trained volunteers and teachers provide tutoring and classes to adult learners at little or no cost. We collaborate with multiple local organizations to deliver such services. We provide this service without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Description
The Literacy Council of Norristown (LCN) was founded in 1984 by a group of dedicated Montgomery County citizens to address the problem of low English literacy in the Norristown area.
Our goal is to improve the quality of life of those we serve: at home, in the workplace, and in the community Through our programs our students increase their ability to read, write and speak English; increase their employment opportunities; increase their educational opportunities; increase their parenting abilities; and increase their social skills. We serve over 300 adults each year.
Our programs include:
One-on-One Tutoring Program: We provide Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and High School Equivalency (HSE) instruction through one-on-one tutoring. Most tutors meet with their student(s) approximately three hours per week. Prior to becoming a volunteer, our tutors attend a mandatory 13.5-hour Tutor Training Program.
English for Speakers of Other Languages Classes: Through our ESOL classes we enable students to improve their basic skills of reading, writing and speaking English We have 3 ESOL class levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Classes were offered twice weekly during morning and evening hours. They were offered September through May.
Community Programs: In the past we have offered various community-based programs.
